A new chapter in our food allergic life.

Oh boy. Just got some crazy news from the pediatrician. We finally got Luke tested (blood) for food allergies. I don't know what has taken us so long to do this. His older brother has a slew of food allergies, (eggs, peanuts, treenuts, fish, shellfish) all of which would cause a potentially fatal anaphylactic reaction. Our plan of management has been strict avoidance. Nothing with those allergens enter the house.
This has worked well for us. Luke has not reacted to anything ever, so we assumed he either: A- was allergic to eggs, peanuts, treenuts, fish or shellfish, or B- had no food allergies. Because of other factors usually present in food allergic kids, (eczema and asthma) not being present in Lukie, I actually let myself begin to believe he had no food allergies.

Oh, hello Denial! How you doin'?

Well, we finally got around to getting an actual blood test done and the results are a little confusing. First off, he is very allergic to eggs. But he also got mild results to peanuts, wheat, and soy.
What?! He has had wheat and soy before, and has never had an ANA (food allergy slang for anaphylactic) reaction. But maybe he has had some kind of reaction that I did not correlate with a food allergic reaction. His stools get really hard and stuff sometimes, could that be from soy or wheat? He hated edamame when I gave it to him for snack once. The Dr. said that if he has had those things with no reaction, that it should be fine to give him.
So I should avoid peanuts because he has never had them and would react, but can continue to give him things containing wheat and soy? I am not sure I am comfortable with that, considering you can never predict the severity of a future reaction based on past reactions. So no. I am not comfortable with that at all, and I surely don't understand this.
Not to mention, I am feeling so so guilty. I have been super-vigilant when there have been cookies and cakes around Anthony because I knew they could make him so sick. I should have been (and was not) the same way with Luke.  The many pot-lucks and birthday parties and other things that we have been to, and I had not kept a close eye on the food around him. I feel awful. I am so thankful he has never had an egg-filled cookie, or cake or treat. God has surely kept him safe.
So, what next? Another trip to the allergist, where we will get a skin test, and hopefully all of my questions answered regarding what to avoid and why. We will have to get him his own set of epi-pens, and medical alert ID things.
Oh my Lukie, I am so sorry I did not know. I am sorry I assumed everything was ok with your little immune system, and did not take the same precautions as I have for your brother. But now that I know better, I will do better.

Spring is Finally Here!

Finally! I feel like Spring has finally come to stay. My allergies are killing me, and my skin is reacting to sunlight in true Jess fashion. I'm pretty sure I have solar urticaria. WebMD told me so, so it must be legit. Seriously though, I do have all the symptoms and it seems to be getting worse with age. It's kind of awful but the fresh air is so nice, I can't stand to stay inside. I likely am going to have to get some sun protective clothing. If I was worried about being cool before, wearing a long-sleeve swimsuit really will seal my fate as a very, uncool mom. hahaha! Last week was so nice out that we took the whole week off from school and focused on enjoying the weather and preparing for Easter. The homeschooling community likes to say that instead of taking off for snow-days, we take off for sun-days. I do love that flexibility.  Today, we started back up with school again but the boys still spent most of the day outside in the fresh city air, and our day was pre...

I never thought I'd ever...

Me and Ian were talking about how much lives have changed since we had kids. Not only the way we spend our time together as a family, but also our mentalities. For example, I was talking to a friend of mine who either just got a tattoo or was thinking about getting another, or both. I can't remember. Anyway, I have been wanting to get a tattoo, so I asked her how much she thought a small one would cost. She said "oh, not that much! Maybe 60 bucks?" I immediately said "Oh, well that's 3 boxes of diapers, which is too much".  I realized then, that I convert the cost of pretty much everything to the amount of diapers I could get for the same price. haha! I never thought the biggest commodity in my life would be a jumbo box of Target brand diapers, or that this exchange rate would help curb my appetite for things that I want, but don't need to buy. An example would be a Nintendo Wii. I have wanted one for a couple of years now. But it costs like10 boxes ...

Old Beginnings

Well, I fought the urge to create a completely new blog and decided to update this trusty old dumping ground of musings and stories. I am not sure what this will end up being, if anything at all other than a fun website to look back on in a few years, before websites become obsolete altogether. The truth is, I really enjoy hearing the sound of my fingers tapping away at the computer keys. It makes me feel like I am doing something productive, even though I am not.      Here I sit, at 11:40pm on a Tuesday night and I wonder what exactly tomorrow will bring. It's strange to be able to predict with almost complete accuracy the grand scheme of the day, but also not know what quirks lie ahead. For instance today, I knew that the kids would be going outside to play. I did not know that before bed my 4 year old would claim to have broken his leg while outside and beg me to carry him up the stairs to his room (which I did). I did know that we would start a n...
